A Veteran's PTSD Thanks!

Today, I was informed that our wonderful military, responsible for fostering a less than favorable working environment for me for nearly FOUR (4) excruciating years, has 100% denied any role in the PTSD diagnosis of a certain service member during military tenure.

From this blatant disregard, it appears that repeated sexual harassment and discrimination of many types are excusable, acceptable, and those who resist will continue to be black-balled... That it's okay-especially if another trauma occurred prior to enlistment and no treatment or diagnosis was ever established-to retaliate against individuality. "What ever happened to "accountability," I say!

Anywho, Thanks a bunch U.S. Military!!!  At least, now I know that the maltreatment I endured was never my fault, and that it is indeed okay for me to be smart AND pretty ;-)

To my beloved active-duty and veteran victims: HANG IN THERE!  You'll overcome the oppression, at some point. Stay strong & God Bless.

Come back to see me, soon! Tootles!!!

In love with a drug!

The average person complains (after catching their breath) about constipation, due to taking iron supplements. CLEARLY, that's no fun! But I wonder how many people, especially those experiencing both anemia AND pregnancy, have realized the luxury of a prescription drug called, "Ferralet-90."

Well, I have and now, I'm in love with it!  Ferralet-90 is an iron supplement, but that's not all it is.  Each tablet is also packed with a stool softener (an immense help), called "docusate sodium," in addition to Vitamins C and B12, as well as folic acid.

We all know that Vitamin C provides a boost for our immune systems. On the other hand, the work reputation of folic acid and Vitamin B12 may be less popular; both are commonly prescribed to patients for treatment of various types of anemia and blood formation diagnoses. Ferralet-90 has all five remedies packed into one tablet!

I always say, "An informed patient is an empowered patient." I wish everyone could have access to the relief I feel! Ask your doctor how Ferralet-90 can help you. It's probably the best thing my doctor has done for me, yet!

Thanks again for stopping by! Remember to come back and see me soon! Tootles!!!

Extraordinarily Unslaved

12 YEARS A SLAVE: My, how some things have changed.

It is another snippet of history that synergizes me as I strive for excellence, insisting on honoring my grandmother. She has picked cotton many days of her life, worked as a maid, and endured countless injustices, all while doing everything within her power to make sure I have every advantage possible. Nutritional foods, shelter, clothing, education, a hearty spirit, and good hygiene; "Patsey" suffered an atrociously physical and mental breakdown, despite her "master's" affection and her remarkably significant contribution of labor, over a bar of soap.

For that, and years of enduring my own disparities, I can not sit idly by and allow maltreatment unto me by anyone, no matter the color, position, size, or beliefs of my aggressor. My ancestors have afforded me such confidence. I have since earned additional rank through efforts of my own.

Subsequently, I will have my bar of soap, in addition to a surplus of valuable resources. So, do not dare tell me I should be satisfied with what is given to me, especially when I know I have earned even more and that I am entitled to that which is beyond measure.

I am extraordinary. I will not apologize for being extraordinary. Not now. Not ever.

To God I pray and give constant gratitude for my countless blessings, including my right to free speech. To stand up for myself, and now, for my unborn child.

See me, soon. And thanks for stopping by!

Pharmacy Visits & Your Rx Info

In case you like to read the ending first,
Click HERE to see what it costs to leak folk's prescription information.

            Back in 2003, the healthcare industry experienced another change.  Patient privacy was moved to the forefront, and subsequently, business as usual became not so usual.  The Privacy Rule under Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) was in full force.  HIPAA is a federal law that was originally implemented with the ability of employees to take their health insurance packages with them, as they change employers.  Today, HIPAA is cover much more; it now allows patients many more rights within the healthcare system.  Some of them include the right to request actions such as amendment to their own medical records, accountings of disclosure of their medical records, and alternative communications.
In response to abuse of PHI in the past, new policies and procedures also had to be implemented and enforced, in order to increase protection of patient privacy.  The Privacy Rule is responsible for new policies and procedures that specifically address the way PHI can be used and transmitted, criteria for release of PHI, as well as accountings of disclosure; except for the purpose of Treatment, Payment, or Other healthcare operations (TPO), every disclosure is required to be logged.
Under the Privacy Rule, identifiable information, also referred to as Protected Health Information (PHI) includes any information that can be used to identify a person.  Examples of PHI include elements such as a telephone number, insurance plan number, name, and address/email address, just to name a few.
Other terms that have become commonly used and necessary to maintain patient privacy, while performing day-to-day duties, include:
CMS: Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services;
HHS: Health and Human Services;
Covered Entity: Healthcare providers, health plans, and clearinghouses;
Clearinghouse: An entity that processes or facilitates the processing of nonstandard data elements of health information into standard data elements;
Code Sets: Any set of codes used for encoding data elements, i.e. ICD (diagnostic/procedure) codes;
Authorization: Written consent that is signed by a patient, which gives permission to disclose PHI; and
Disclosure: The release, transfer, provision of, access to any information outside of the entity where PHI is stored.

In outpatient pharmacy settings, opportunities for privacy breeches are countless.  For example, staff should take extra care to keep patient names and their medication labels from plain view, as customers and patients approach the pharmacy counter.  Likewise, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians should be conscious of patient privacy, as various steps of the drug utilization review process are performed, exercising caution in communicating patient information.  For example, phone calls to other covered entities or patients about refills, drug-drug interactions, or action to be taken after missing a dose can be easily overheard by unauthorized individuals; in instances where patients do not answer, a voice mail message may be left, but diagnosis details and medical record numbers should never be mentioned.  Conversations of this kind should take place in a more intimate setting, as opposed to the pharmacy counter, where other customers and patients are present.  On-site patient counseling should also occur in a private space, whenever possible; patients with communicable diseases such as Herpes Simplex II and HIV-AIDS may be extremely sensitive to privacy issues, and may be likely to decline counseling, unless privacy is reassured.
Patients are more informed nowadays than in the past, meaning they tend to be familiar with common indications for many fast-moving drugs.  Hence, an unprecedented demand for the “Minimum Necessary Rule;” by definition, employees should have limited access to PHI, according to their job functions, and should only share such information on a need-to-know basis.  This allows staff to focus on their individual roles and decreases opportunities to erroneously disclose PHI.  However, staff should be aware of organizations that require more feasible access to PHI, namely worker’s compensation carriers, law enforcement agencies, child protective services, and municipal offices.
In the event that patients identify breaches of their privacy, they now have points of contact, to whom they may express their concerns.  Every healthcare Covered Entity is required to have a Facility Privacy Officer (FPO) on staff.  Patients can report breaches of privacy in writing to the appropriate FPO or to HHS’s Office of Civil Rights, directly; each Covered Entity is required to provide this information within their Notice of Privacy Practices to all patients.  Penalties for HIPAA Privacy violations and non-compliance could include fines as low as $250 and as high as $1.5 million, PLUS a maximum of 10 years’ imprisonment.
Ultimately, whose business is your medical record?  It is the business of healthcare providers, health plans, and clearinghouses, but on a need-to-know basis.

Your Baby's Safety

On a scale of 1 to 10, how safe do you feel with your baby in your vehicle, knowing that an airbag could deploy if a car accident occurred?
Totally unsafe = 1 and Totally safe = 10.

What if there was a way to tell your vehicle, "Hey! My kid is in this vehicle, so don't try anything stupid... Don't set off your airbags on my baby!"

If that were the case, then how would you rate your feeling of safety for your child, while driving your vehicle?
Totally unsafe = 1 and Totally safe = 10.

Well, it was brought to my attention that there is a way to inform my vehicle that a baby is inside of it, and that the car seat can request that that my vehicle holds off on deploying its airbags!!!

The system responsible for this amazement is called, "BabySmart."  The way it works is by way of a special technology that allows the vehicle to identify a compatible car seat by its built-in "transponder unit."  The baby's car seat is identified by the vehicle, then the vehicle disarms the nearest air bag, leaving your baby safe from an airbag beat-down!  Of course, Mercedes sells their brand... But naturally, we went to Babies R Us for a "Graco" brand car seat system; it's BabySmart-equipped and much more reasonably priced ;-) For more details on this amazing system,  CLICK HERE!

If you haven't already, look into getting this car seat system for your little bundle of your joy.  Contact your car dealership ASAP!

Progressive or Regressive?

She's pushy!  She's mouthy!  Who does she think she is?!?  She needs to be put in her place!

I have been notoriously accused of all of the above, mostly because I tend to speak up. We don't have to accept that which is given to us, according to what others think we should have; negotiate or lose.

"Well, if you keep quiet, you have a better chance at things getting better." My response? I've tried that, resisting conflict and just "playing along," but things usually turned out worse than when I speak up.  So, I say to all women, be aware! "SPEAK UP and FIGHT for what you deserve!"

Which leads to my question... Is the United States really PROGRESSIVE or is it more REGRESSIVE? Based on current and historical behavioral tolerances, such as harassment, the United States (and its government) has proven itself to be more regressive than progressive.

For this reason, I applaud those in Palayam, Thiruvananthapuram (India) for their efforts to empower women against sexual harassment in the workplace.  Even in a country (India), where women's rights are known to barely exist, an effort like this is being promoted.  Yet, here in the United States, where women's rights are supposedly fundamental and basically an entitlement, we are still shunned by Corporate America and our government for reporting and otherwise resisting harassment.  Then comes reputation-bashing and name-calling... "Trouble-maker, pushy, mouthy..." and the list goes on.

Why is this important?  It is important because sexual harassment in the workplace is an issue that has affected me since I was a military service-member.  It was a terrible thing, then.  It is a terrible thing, now.
I am a woman, and I stand against any form of oppression.  NEWSFLASH: I am not going away ;-)

Brand vs. Generic Drugs

Many of us use generic drugs, in effort to save money.  The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) determines which generic drugs can be dispensed in place of brand name drugs.  But what happens when the brand is unavailable? What if no generic drug is available to replace the brand name drug that was prescribed?

Usually, pharmacists would call the prescribing physician and suggest alternatives; as a military pharmacy technician, I've had to do this on many occasions, in the past.  Well, in some states, pharmacists are legally permitted to change prescriptions to a completely different drug, but within the same drug category.

As long as there is a justifiable, documented explanation for the change (including review of the patient's medical history), I don't see a problem with it.

Think about how this information makes you feel.  Meanwhile, always take advantage of the opportunity to speak with a pharmacist about your prescriptions.

Also, remember to come back to see me, soon.  Thanks for stopping by!!!

Need a Job?

"Need a job?"  What kind of question is that?!

The average unemployment rate (2014) in the United States is nearly 7%, according to the Huffington Post (02/07/2014).  So, yes!  The average person does need a job!

Without a job, one is usually left with no health insurance coverage.  An alternative? Try enrolling in Medicaid.  Eligibility requirements pertaining to income & assets, age, and familial status, apply; additional terms, such as citizenship status, and coverage vary from state-to-state.

Once a job is finally secured, health insurance is back on the table with components required by "ObamaCare," of course.  Benefit packages for full-time positions tend to include health insurance; check with your employer about benefits for part-time positions.

***Please note that Medicaid coverage is not "free," per se.  If ever a Medicaid recipient inherits a large sum of cash, Medicaid receives their portion of the inheritance first.***

Here's a tip... Don't splurge, just because you think the cost is on someone else's dime; be conservative, and save yourself some grief, once it's time to "pay the piper!"

Pretty interesting, how job status ties into health insurance coverage, huh?  Good!  So, I'll see you, soon!

Thanks for stopping by!!!

Sex Matters

Actually, sex (not necessarily size) does matter.  The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is actively working toward  determining differences in how drugs work, based on sex.

For example, FDA reports that medications containing zolpidem (Ambien's generic), like other sleeping aids, affect women more than men.  Since sleeping aids have been proven to exit the body slower in women than men.  Women tend to be more vulnerable.  But just because women are more likely to be affected by side effects of sleep aids, doesn't mean that men can use sleep aids without any risk of feeling side effects.  Also, please note that failure to feel or experience any side effects does not decrease the chance of impaired judgement or the ability to drive/operate heavy machinery.

So, take your medication as prescribed, and be careful out there! That way, you can pay me a return visit :)

STOP! Don't Pay!!!

We all want to pay our bills and behave as responsible adults, right? Of course we do. But take a moment to research the issue before you give up the cash. Here's why:

You're almost certain that your insurance plan covers, and therefore, should have paid for your doctor's visit. Yet, you have a bill from your doctor's office in hand, and there is no mention of your insurance plan's contribution to any part of the expense!

"What the... ?" It's okay to panic for 2 seconds, but the next reaction should be a call to your insurance plan. Confirm that your visit is covered, and request the confirmation in writing. There is a possibility that your particular claim was submitted with errors, and subsequently denied. Instead of correcting and resubmitting the claim to your health plan for payment, perhaps it was easier to just forward the bill to YOU!

Save yourself some grief by becoming very familiar with your health plan's EOB or Explanation of Benefits; this document will usually state "This is not a bill," across the top of the page. An EOB will show dates of service, diagnoses, how each diagnosis was treated, AND the amount your doctor was paid. EOB's are your best friends, so keep track of them; BFF's for life!

Besides, you've paid enough for the coverage you have! It's not your job to pay for someone else's errors, too ;-)

Don't be afraid to ask about their billing practices, and remember to come back and see me soon!

Thanks for stopping by!

Doctor Office Issues

How do you feel about your doctor's staff? How do you feel about your doctor?

I'm hoping your responses are positive and happy, but I'm not naive enough to expect it. The truth is, either your doctor's staff and/or you doctor is/are likely to cause you negative feelings. (Sorry to be the bearer of bad news).

But, I love my doctor! What could possibly cause me to feel negatively about my doctor? Here are a few potential examples:

1) Difficulty communicating with staff;
2) Unable to reach a live person via their 24-hour on-call service;
3) Failure to follow your insurance plan's protocol, resulting in your inability to receive your prescriptions;
4) Broken promises to call in your prescription to a pharmacy; or
5) Doctor's failure to answer your questions and/or provide you with the resources necessary to improve your medical condition; just to name a few.

Chances are you (or your child/loved one) are probably not feeling well. So, the last thing you need is for processes to run in inefficiently. So what are you going to do? Complaining is useless, unless you are willing to actually do something about it. Things you CAN DO:

1) Take advantage of your time and Express your concerns directly to your doctor;
2) If things don't change, write a letter to your insurance plan, explaining your concerns;
3) Shop around for another doctor/healthcare provider;
4) It doesn't matter if your health insurance plan is Medicaid, Medicare, Tricare, Aetna, Cigna, etc.;
5) Always remember, IT'S YOUR DIME FOR THEIR TIME. Your doctor owes you appropriate service.

NOW, GO GET IT!!!
...and come back to see me, soon!

Space Exploration & Black History

Astronaut health and human exploration of Space are connected to Black History.  NASA's team, which is comprised of tens of thousands of individuals, have reached incredible milestones in Space exploration. A couple of NASA's responsibilities are to ensure the health and safety of astronauts.  Meanwhile, medical innovations such as heart pumps, used to prolong the life of individuals awaiting heart transplants, are also attributed to the work of NASA's extraordinary team.

The Black lady shown in the photo below was my best friend's mother.  We grew up across the bridge from Kennedy Space Center, where she worked as part of the NASA team, as unprecedented results were achieved.  I wrote an article about her role in the Space Program (Florida Today-A Gannett Company), shortly after her untimely death.  Rest in peace, Ms. Eartha; you will not be forgotten.

Cute Infections

Awwwh! Look at the cute kitty!!!!! Yeah, they're cute and all. PREGNANT WOMEN BEWARE! The feces that those cute kitties leave behind in their litter box (and other surprise areas) can yield very unhealthy effects on both you AND your unborn baby; toxoplasmosis is the potentially fatal infection to which I'm referring. My home is now a cat-free zone :-/

The "Good" Church People

The "Good" Church People; one of the main sources of my nausea, more so than pregnancy.  Are regular church-goers better than non-church-goers?  Do regular church-goers have the right to judge and criticize others?  Is it okay to impose on others' personal lives and availability, as long as it's in the name of the CHURCH?  During my journey through 2013, I learned so very much... and the "Good" is something that I promised to share within my next post.  So, here it is:

Yes, I was raised "in the church," like the "Good" Church People.  Yes, we regularly attended church and I was active in various activities and ministries.  My parents, however, were not among the "'Good'Church People."  Conversely, we were among "the judged" group; although Matthew 7:1 reads, "Judge not, lest ye be judged."  Hence, my beef with pretentious church people, who continue to fall short of their duty to assist and strengthen our community; more details to follow in my Book #4.

As an adult, I have since returned to my home church and immediately agreed to and began work in various ministries.  My motive was to share my time (of which I used to have plenty) in a productive fashion, and with deserving individuals and organizations.  That is, until the "Good" Church People began to criticize my "Pretty" and community popularity, to the point that I was silently blackballed.  For the most part, my contributions were welcome, as long as the spotlight was shifted from me to others...

So, what's "Good" about this?  The "Good" of it all is that I recognized the negative impact that my involvement with "Good" Church People was having on my health.  As a result, I've made the necessary changes to spare myself a truckload of grief and maximize my time.

At the end of the day, I am a Christian woman, who relies heavily on her faith.  However, I am not foolish enough to allow my spirit to be crushed by mere mortals, who sin and struggle through life JUST LIKE ME.  Instead, I maintain my own personal relationship with the Lord, while moving forward with my life by pursuing my goals and building my own family.

Thanks for stopping by!  More to follow, soon =)
