Why are you STILL single?!@#$%^&*()

You're so beautiful and smart, and ... Why aren't you married?  Well, I'll tell you why I'm not married.  I'm not married because I break off relationships at the hint of betrayal, especially in the form of infidelity and physical/emotional abuse; my sweet kindness is often mistaken for a weakness.  But like I told my godfather (God Bless his soul; R.I.P.), when I left my ex-husband... "I will not tolerate maltreatment."  By this, I mean I MUST be the main priority or we can NOT be together, period.  For example, unlimited access is a two-way street; courtship must precede marriage; pampering is a must; my pretty-face-intelliegence-multi-skill combo package will not be dismissed or overlooked, we will not shack up together and/or make babies prior to marriage; in-laws will not have more influence over our relationship than I; and I like my diamonds in princess cut ;-)

Loosen up, Domanique!  You're too uptight!!!  My response: "OH, WELL!"  Why should I put my needs and desires on the back burner, only to let a man have his way?    Meanwhile, I'm still in my prime and it's full-steam ahead with my career and educational goals, personal improvement, and emotional stability.  All of whom are not or can not actively contribute to my career and educational goals, personal improvement, and emotional stability (Translation: MY OVERALL WELL-BEING & HAPPINESS) are hereby disqualified from all activity pertaining to Domanique Culpepper.  No apologies.  My uncle used to say, "I laugh and joke, but I don't play!"

Ultimately,we must respect and accept one another, to include honesty, submission, and trust; as you can see, I take these things seriously.  When these traits are absent from relationships, the balance is thrown off, and we move closer to an unhealthy relationship; at this moment, I am re-living the writing of my third book, entitled TELL-TALE SIGNS OF A TRAIN WRECK...and I am now, VERY pleased to have come to the epiphany of it all, put it on paper, and published it!

At the end of the day, it's about creating and maintaining healthy relationships.  The same goes for all of my relationships actually, whether friendships, familial relationships, workplace dynamics, or social/professional networking.  So, in the words of my wonderful Grandma Lottie, I must say, "Pee or get off the pot!"

Again, thanks for stopping by!  Toodles!!!

Why I Write?

I enjoy writing very much; whether it's a medical topic or a community involvement.  It's therapy for me, and allows me to express myself in ways that I have been unable through other ways.  It's also a quiet process, so there's no chaos to irritate or startle me... It's peaceful and brings me great comfort.  Teaching gives me the social interaction I crave, but writing provides a sense of safety that I require.

So, please know that I am working on Book #4.  It's just taking a little longer than expected.  However, Christmas Break is a good time for me to wrap it up ;-)  Meanwhile, BLOOD ON THE OTHER SIDE, A PEPPER UNPICKED, and TELL-TALE SIGNS OF A TRAINWRECK are still available for your special attention.  If you have read all three, and ready for Book #4, it would be my pleasure to discuss any parts of any of my three published books.  All you have to do is post a comment here or send me an email message by clicking here!

As usual, thanks for stopping by!

HIV Status at Home

Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on July 3, 2012, OraQuick is now on the market!  It is the first at-home-HIV Test to hit the market.  Walgreens, CVS, Walmart, Rite Aid, Kroger, and Navarro Discount Pharmacy currently carry OraQuick.  For $40.00 each, the public now has access and control over their own HIV testing and results.  However, testing should not be performed prior to 3 months after exposure.  Know your status ;-)

Private sweat

It's called "hyperhidrosis,"otherwise known as a condition of excessive sweat.  As discussed today on the T.V. program called "The Doctors," excessive sweat tends to cause body odor.  The type of odor produced is dependent on the body area that sweats, such as armpits and private areas.  However, there are ways to prevent such embarrassing odors from occurring.  One way that was discussed today is for women to wear cotton panties, with or without a pantyliner; careful that the panties are not too tight, which can cause additional sweating.

Other tactics that help reduce body odor include frequent bathing and personal hygiene.  Also, application of baby powder can help reduce wetness that can be responsible for body odor.

This topic reminds me of an episode of the T.V. series called, "Shahs of Sunset," when Lilly encountered "crotch juice" on one of her designs that was used during a previous fitting.  I can definitely understand her concern.  However, let us remember that Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) within bodily fluids of HIV+ individuals would not transmit HIV onto garments; other infections, such as STDs, is another matter.

Consequently, wearing such a contaminated garment would not infect the next person with HIV.  ON THE OTHER HAND, I do NOT condone wearing intimate garments worn by others, ESPECIALLY when they have not been cleaned... pantyliner or not!

Prison: AIDS & Excecution

Did you know that inmates infected with AIDS can be released early?  Click here to read more.

World AIDS Day

Did you know that today is World AIDS Day?

The Obama Administration's strategy to combat HIV/AIDS was released last year (2011).  Reduction of new infections, increase in access to healthcare, reduction in health disparities, and achievement of a more coordinated national response to HIV/AIDS are among the main goals.  To do this, the Obama Administration is advancing education about HIV/AIDS.  The focus is on African-Americans, Latinos, and gay men.  Come 2014, The Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare) has been expanded to include HIV-testing and will ensure healthcare coverage to all Americans, including those living with HIV/AIDS.

I love that President Obama issued a presidential proclamation for World AIDS Day; CLICK HERE to read President Obama's Proclamation.

Pharmacy robbery!

I knew it!  I knew it!  I knew it!!!!  Another attempted robbery of a pharmacy took place last night (Tuesday, November 27, 2012) at a Palm Bay, Florida Walgreens.  The 20-year old robber pointed a gun at a pharmacy technician and a pharmacist, demanding that they provide him with their oxycodone supply.  Multiple Walgreens customers and patients waiting to get prescriptions filled were key in getting help to the pharmacy, as they used their mobile telephones to call 911.

Most of my pharmacy career (90%) has been worked in a secure environment, such as military, hospital, and home health pharmacies.  Since working in a retail pharmacy environment over recent months, I must say that it is my least favorite, mainly because of the safety risk, especially since the work space is far too accessible to the public for my comfort.  I say install plexiglass and a teller speaker, for starters!

It's a shame that we can't even go to work in peace anymore.  We have got to make more changes to ensure a safer work environment for pharmacy staff.  But at least the pharmacy robber, in this case, was arrested and detained at a local hospital, where his gunshot wounds are being treated.  Other than that, no one was hurt.

Birth defects

What do you know about birth defects?  Well, since last month was National Awareness for birth defects, and this month (November) is National Awareness for premature births, I thought it to be appropriate to share an article that I wrote about birth defects.  They're usually unexpected.  So, why not take a moment to increase your awareness on Birth Defects now?

Military Woman Serves in Vain

As a recent newlywed, (July 27, 2012), Nikki Hoskins, of Arkansas, is also a widow.  During a business meeting that other employees attended, Mrs. Hoskins' husband (Ernest Hoskins) was shot in the face at point blank range by his employer on Friday, November 9, 2012.  The shooting resulted in his death, and the shooter (Mr. Hoskins' boss) has NOT been arrested yet.  His name is Chris Reynolds, and who's to say that he hasn't fled the state of Arkansas yet!  If he's bold enough to call police and report that he killed a man in cold blood, AND the Arkansas State Police Department refuses to arrest Chris Reynolds, who's to say!

The irony of this case is that Mrs. Hoskins, 24-years old, is also an Army Specialist Hoskins in the United States Army, and Veterans Day was celebrated less than 72 hours after her husband's murder.  So, while Army Specialist Hoskins fights for our United States, who's helping her fight for justice in the cold-blooded killing of her husband?  Thank God she has Attorney Benjamin Crump and his legal team on her side.  Look for a press conference on this blatant injustice, around about... NOW!

Marijuana

Even though some states have "legalized" marijuana (weed) use, whether medicinal or recreational, federal law supercedes state law. In other words, you can still be arrested by federal officials for possession and use of marijuana. So, if you must indulge, be careful!

Our Veterans Day

Today is reserved to celebrate those who have served and are currently serving our great United States of America.  We say "Happy Veterans Day," but is it indeed a "Happy" time for Veterans and our families.  As a United States Navy Veteran, I can tell you that Veterans Day is a bittersweet time for me and many others.  We mourn over the time spent away from our families, military experiences that have negatively impacted our lives, and the memories of watching others suffer and lose their lives for our country.  Realistically, those are not happy times.  However, we managed to rise above it all.  Now, survivors of military life can look back over those days and feel an intrinsic sense of pride for having pulled through and continue to overcome adversity.  It's not easy, but we are soldiers, so we can never give up the fight.  Knowing this makes me happy, and because of that I can earnestly say, "HAPPY VETERANS DAY!"

Excitement redirected

With all the excitement going around, I just want to send out an extra safety reminder. Remember, the PULL OUT method is not truly effective. If you're having unprotected sex, please realize that pre-cum or residual semen inside the tip of the penis, can contain enough sperm to fertilize an egg = pregnancy. Another reason to wrap it up ;-)

Back to work!

Yes, he's Barack!  I mean, President Barack Obama is still our president.  So, let's get back to work.  By that I mean back to work on things that matter, such as health insurance for all, and better treatment and benefits for our veterans, such as myself.  Remember, preventative healthcare is like preventative maintenance of your vehicle; if you don't change the oil every 3,000 miles or 3 months~ish, you're bound to blow up your engine.  Just some food for thought.  So, get yourself checked out.  I did ;-)

Abortion: A relevant topic

As registered voters all across the United States make their way to and from the polls, one hot topic continues to stay in the forefront...FAMILY PLANNING.  For some, family planning means making a schedule for conceiving a child, and planning out every detail of the child's life.  However, from a political standpoint, Family Planning equates to PLANNED PARENTHOOD, which includes abortion.

Well, I won't beat around the bush on this one, especially since I've been criticized for being too objective; well, I guess it depends on who you ask ;-)  Personally, I would more than likely choose NOT to abort my child, I were to ever become pregnant at an "inopportune" time.  However, I do not believe abortion should be illegal.  A woman should have a right to choose whether to abort or carry a child, but not to use it as a measure of birth control.  Here's an article that I wrote about =======> ABORTION

Gasoline Rip-off!

So, here's my political question of the day: Which presidential candidate is going to stop gas stations like Kangaroo/Valero from charging absorbent amounts onto folks' credit cards? $25.07 does NOT = $100.00! Wth?

How does this tie into Health Education Tips?  Well, the principle of the matter has pissed me off, first of all.  This causes a slight rise in my blood pressure and stress, maybe increased production of hydrochloric acid, maybe intensifies other stressors =====> maybe ulcers later?  Either way, the stress of it all is not good for my health or yours.

Somebody needs to do something because this is not fair.  Maybe you can guess where I WON'T be purchasing gas from in the future?  You got it!  No more Kangaroo/Valero for me, baby >:-(

Compounding Pharmacy & Investigations

Oh my goodness!  So, I posted about the Framingham, Massachusetts compounding pharmacy responsible for the contaminated epidural injections and other products, causing the current meningitis outbreak.  Well, did you hear that the pharmacy has been accused of operating outside the limits of its license?

Yep!  The pharmacy was raided by the FDA, but the investigation is still ongoing. Apparently, it's not just epidural products that are under scrutiny, either!  Now, it's contamination and illegal distribution of narcotics that are areas of interest...  So, we won't know the official details until the investigations are concluded.  Meanwhile, another source of infection has been identified, more infected patients have been reported, and more people have died.  We're up to 15 affected states now, as far north as New Hampshire, down to Florida, and as far west as Idaho.

If you're in the Brevard County area, be sure to follow my story entitled, "Meningitis Outbreak," in the Ebony News Today Newspaper

DNA and Pharmaceuticals

One of the things I learned from our pharmaceutical outcomes and policy seminar at UF this weekend is that my interest in pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics is more rare than I realized.  I only met one person (one of my professors, actually) who demonstrated a strong and particular interest in this area of pharmacy; below is a pic of me and two of my colleagues.  I certainly hope we can work out a research project for me, soon!  Here's the link to an earlier article that I wrote about the role of DNA in disease process and pharmaceutical treatment Pharmacogenetics/pharmacogenomics

Time well spent

So, we're finishing up our second day of our seminar on pharmaceutical outcomes and policy today.  One of the interesting diseases that we are discussing is the treatment and cost of macular degeneration; an eye disease that affects an individual's ability to see fine details.  Just so happens, that I've already written an article on this particular disease several months ago.  So, now I get to think about what I wrote and relate it to this particular presentation...

Click here to access my article Domanique's article on AMD

We're discussing two drugs in the treatment of macular degeneration.  One is called "Avastin," and the other is called "Lucentis."  Apparently, Lucentis is the more expensive product.  It's interesting to discuss treatment options of a disease, cost, and contributing factors to compliance and results of treatment.

So, yeah... I am very pleased to spend almost my entire weekend at UF with my college of pharmacy professors and colleagues ;-)

Outbreak!

Another deadly outbreak of meningitis, here in the United States; Michigan is the 7th state to experience a deadly outbreak of Meningitis, by the way.  This time, the meningitis outbreak is caused by a super-rare strain of fungus called, "Aspergillus Meningitis."  Try saying that 10 times!  Seriously, there are 9 different states involved, and a total of 91 infected people, so far, according to CBS News.  The source?  Contaminated steroid (methylprednisolone) injections, usually administered for back pain!  Several patients who received injections to their spines have had strokes, according to the CDC.  People diagnosed with asthma or cystic fibrosis, or have weakened immune systems are more susceptible to infection.  But fret not!  Sources say that aspergillus meningitis is not spread from person-to-person.  Unfortunately, 7 people have died so far.  Click here OUTBREAK DETAILS  to read more details.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.  But thanks for stopping by.

Crackheads, beware!

Guess what I heard!!!

The crackheads are NOT going to like this very much; and let me expand on the target group, which is not "crackheads" alone, but all drug abusers and drug addicts, particularly those who abuse drugs like oxycodone and hydrocodone.

Apparently, drug manufacturers are joining the forces against misuse, overuse, and overall abuse of opioids, such as codeine, oxycodone, and hydrocodone. When drug abusers find out that the flushing sensation that they are experiencing from ingesting too much of their opioid of choice is caused by a vitamin (niacin), they're probably going to feel betrayed; as strange as that sounds, I do not see any of this going very well for the abuser. Yeah... they're probably going to throw a tantrum, when they figure this out.

Another issue is the nasal irritation they're going to experience from trying to inhale it. Apparently, that nice burning sensation is due to an added deterrent (sodium lauryl sulfate) that will, hopefully, help yield a positive outcome = less drug abuse, due to irritation and inconvenience.

Oh, and IV pushers, we don't want you to feel left out! When you try to inject it, the high you normally get probably won't happen because the effect has been blocked, such as with the drug Suboxone (see attached presentation).

Well, I was just itching to make this announcement! So, I'm glad I got it off of my chest. To peruse the attach presentation of details, provided by our... YOU GOT IT! THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION, the FDA ;-) You should CLICK on the title above (Crackheads, beware!) to view it.

NEW DRUG: PROSTATE CANCER

Let me tell you what I heard today! I heard that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new drug called "Xtandi" (or enzalutamide) for the treatment of prostate cancer in men who continue the fight of their lives, even after having certain male-reproductive organs surgically removed; they call it "late-stage (metastatic) castration-resistant prostate cancer."

I often urge men, especially Black men, to get their prostate exams done. But just because there's a new drug on the market, doesn't mean I will be less vigilant about recruiting men for prostate exams. We've come a long way, but we still have a ways to go!

Congratulations and THANK YOU, FDA! Click the title above (NEW DRUG: PROSTATE CANCER) to visit the FDA's website.

Sex toy regulation

Okay, so I previously posted about Kandi Burruss' rhythmic sex toys; that's one of her products in the picture. Here's the link:  Massage with rhythm

But as I study drug regulation, trying to focus on my assignment about the role of regulation of drugs and medical devices, I couldn't help but wonder... Who regulates sex toys??? I guess it's only natural that my brain would think such a thought, smh...

Of course, I looked it up and learned about an association called, "National Association for the Advancement of Science & Art in Sexuality (NAASAS)." Apparently, sex toys are categorized as novelties, and not medical devices. Therefore, they are not regulated by the FDA or Food and Drug Administration. Instead, sex toys are said to be "self-regulated" by the sex toy industry. As a result (at least one of the results), sex toys can contain "phthalates" and lead paint, unlike children's toys; phthalates are chemicals commonly added to plastics, in order to heighten its flexibility and durability.

This was definitely a juicy lesson learned for me! No pun intended. Click the title (Sex toy regulation) above to learn more about the NAASAS.

Your size my fault

Okay, before I get going with this one, please understand that the intent of this post is to inform and promote awareness, so as to improve future decision-making... hopefully ;-) However, if the shoe fits, or in this case the condom, then sport it!

Sexual compatibility can make or break a relationship, as we all know. In fact, there seems to be some tension between guys who fit into Magnum condoms and guys who fit into Trojan condoms. Guys, please hear me out on this one... Stop giving women a hard time because of your "inadequacies." Chances are she identified your issue before you revealed it to her. Chances also are that she actually cares about you despite it. So, try coming to terms with it yourself, instead of taking your frustration out on her. Breaking up with her is probably not the most effective strategy. And remember, what goes around, comes around ;-)

Ladies... you know I love you all. Besides, I'm a lady myself. But I have to warn my sisters to stop treating men according to a hierarchy of size. Bigger does not mean better... More importantly, his ability to provide for you and protect you and the family is not dependent on his size. Guys, stop acting like the two (abilities outside the bedroom and abilities in the bedroom) are interrelated.

Likewise, guys... Just because you're extraordinarily endowed does not make you "The Man." There's more work to go into an actual relationship, other than what you can bring to the bed. Can you even change a tire? How about a light bulb?

Look for scenarios related to this topic in my next book, which is due to be published in February 2012, just in time for my book signing party on February 11th ;-)

I was chatting with a Navy Shipmate today, you know, sharing our military and professional experiences. Here's something he shared with me that I found to be rather applicable to me.

Don't know about you, but just reading these therapeutic words made me feel more and more liberated! THANKS FOR STOPPING BY! Have a dynamic day!

No matter the costs, in the end I just want to be happy!

“There comes a time when you have to stand up and shout:
This is me damn it! I look the way I look, think the way I think, feel the way I feel, love the way I love! I am a whole complex package. Take me... or leave me. Accept me - or walk away! Do not try to make me feel like less of a person, just because I don't fit your idea of who I should be and don't try to change me to fit your mold. If I need to change, I alone will make that decision!"

Writing about things that matter...

Hello and thanks for stopping by! Today, I thought about Medicaid recipients and the additional changes to Medicaid services, currently among discussion by the Florida Legislature. It's amazing to me how the laws of our land affect our health behavior. This "amazement" prompted me to post a copy of my article about a previous decrease in services covered by Medicaid; click the title above (WRITING ABOUT THINGS THAT MATTER) to read it.

I found it to be interesting, to say the least ;-) (Notice my "Game Face" in the photo?)

Synthetic Drug Abuse Prevention Act of 2012

My President is on the move!  Go President Obama!  Go!

CLICK THE TITLE ABOVE, "Synthetic Drug Abuse Prevention Act of 2012," for details.

Synthetic Drug Abuse Prevention Act of 2012

Are you cheating, again?!

Are you cheating on your pharmacy? Polypharmacy is a big word that means "shopping around" for pharmaceuticals. The late night run to other sources of medication, over-the-counter, or otherwise. It's dangerous because the "other" pharmacy usually is unaware that any cheating is going on. This can lead to excessive use of the same drug (equivalent drug), drug interactions, and an overall unfavorable health outcomes. So, stop cheating! Or at least introduce them to one another ;-)

Thursday, July 26, 2012

I heard that President Obama signed the Synthetic Drug Abuse Prevention Act of 2012 ;-) Stay tuned! There's more to come...
